Alexis Vanasse

Statement

Through a multidisciplinary practice articulated by a pictorial, sculptural, technological, and performative approach, my poetic, anecdotal visual proposals question the limits of normative and rational readings. In other words, their subjectivity questions the mechanisms of conformity to conventional intellectual evaluation systems of artworks. I subversively collect, pick, adorn, and connect elements to construct spaces conducive to an existence free of interpretive boundaries that do not require justification. The open-ended structure of my practice concerns unpredictable movements of memory, the power of the image as a social meeting point, the balance of power between art historical precedent and the contemporary artist, and the borders of popular discourse. There is no quest to convince viewers of pre-defined meanings. The inclusivity of multiple interpretations is the pulse of the work—the wind in the sails. The concretization of such volatile, fleeting perceptions is the source of my work. Our words are perched between tangible and intangible spaces, overseeing how we share and listen to existence and the debates concerning it.
