This Iranian, Bi Artist Explores Hidden Identities, Sexuality And Drag In Her Brilliant Art Show

Mahsa Merci grew up in Tehran, Iran, a country where homosexuality and transsexuality is illegal. In her (brilliant) first North American solo exhibition (SILENT STARS at Mayten's Project), she explores oppression , social norms forced onto people and hidden identities.

With human-sized sculptures, tactile paintings, video animation and intimate interviews, Merci created portraits of some well-known and loved drag artists peeling back ideas and views of “male/female, softness/harshness, beauty/grotesque, and hidden/visible.”
