Shannon Goff

Shannon Goff

My ceramic work embraces abstraction, channeling energies into concretized atmospheres. I begin my sculptures as meditative doodles, but current events and images often co-opt them. Torrid relationships with structure imply entanglement, within collapsing horizons. Imaginary landscapes assemble as gestural drawings in space, testing the conceptual and structural limitations of the material. I address themes of containment and collapse, landscape and structure, sustainability and escape with humor, backdoor mockery, and an aesthetic sensibility that often belies the seriousness of my subject matter. The most recent work engages function and the power of scent to transport; an invitation to travel inward. Drawing out loud and within helps me understand how to best navigate the built and natural environments of contemporary society’s tumultuous terrain.

Detroit native Shannon Goff is an artist preoccupied with the privilege of movement. She makes objects from cardboard and clay but her practice, however, is heavily rooted in the practice of drawing. Studying and living in Japan greatly influenced her sense of line, color, and beyond. Shannon has been the recipient of a Japanese Monbusho grant and twice awarded residencies to the John Michael Kohler Arts/Industry program. She has been an artist in residence at the ClayArch Museum in Gimhae, South Korea and a United States Artists nominee. Her work has been included in exhibitions at the Korean Ceramics Biennale 2019, South Korea, the Knockdown Center, Queens, NY, Red Bull Arts, Detroit, MI, the Jane Hartsook Gallery in NYC, Elijah Wheat Showroom, Newburgh, NY, Honey Ramka, Brooklyn, NY and in Beijing, Berlin, Chicago, London, and Australia. Reviews of her work have been featured in Hyperallergic, DesignBoom, Colossal, FastCoDesign, Cfile, and Detroit Art Review. Shannon received her MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art and is presently an Associate Professor Ceramics at The Penn State University School of Visual Arts.
